There’s a new secret project in the works that is almost certainly in the Metal Gear franchise.

It’s been 4 years since the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Four years since we’ve followed the exploits of Big Boss, or anyone else associated with the Metal Gear franchise. And no, Metal Gear Survive does not count as a real Metal Gear game since it’s about zombies and parallel universes and has about as much to do with Metal Gear as Mario does.

Ahem.

The news of a new Metal Gear possibly being in development comes from Donna Burke, the voice actress who played iDroid in Metal Gear Solid 5. She’s also been in a bunch of other video games, including Virtua Fighter 4 and Silent Hill 2 and 3, and also sang “Sins of the Father” in MGS5.

Burke posted a short video of her harassing her sound engineer during a recording session. The video is posted to Twitter and seems to feature Burke singing a song that very much sounds like it belongs in a Metal Gear game. To add to that theory, she ends her tweet with Venom Snake’s signature signoff: “Kept you waiting, huh?”

When a Twitter user replies that this is likely a reference to a Metal Gear game, Burke even confirms it with “well spotted.”

But what Metal Gear game could we be in store for? Metal Gear Solid 5 certainly left enough plot open to shoehorn the 6th game into the franchise, but it’d also be a simple matter to have a stand-alone game that doesn’t follow the usual suspects. Perhaps a return to the world of Metal Gear Solid: Revengance? Or maybe even another bizarre curveball like Metal Gear Survive?

Or even, dare we say it, a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid?

We’ll have to wait for Konami to drop a trailer to be certain, but if it doesn’t have David Hayter as Solid Snake, there will be hell to pay.
