A film based on author Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro series is now in development in Russia.

Glukhovsky’s novel Metro 2033 is now being adapted into a feature-length movie by Russia’s TV-3 Channel and Central Partnership Film Company, which are part of Gazprom Media. Production is set to begin sometime next year with a release date set for January 1, 2020, per Variety. It’s not yet known who’ll be directing this adaptation, with casting yet to be announced as well.

Metro 2033 is the first novel in Glukhovsky’s trilogy, which consists of sequels Metro 2034 and Metro 2035. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world following a nuclear war. Most of the story revolves around Moscow’s surviving population and their attempts to survive and relocate to Moscow’s underground Metro system. The main protagonist is 24-year-old Arytom, but it’s unclear if the film will also feature the character as the main lead. This will be the first time Glukhovsky’s novel will be turned into a movie.

The author’s series has proved to be quite successful and popular over the years. Metro has over 100 tie-in novels written by fans. There are of course the critically acclaimed video gamer adaptations as well from developer 4A Games. The games consist of 2010’s Metro 2033, 2013’s Metro: Last Light, and most recently 2019’s Metro Exodus. Like the novels, the video games also center on Arytom and his harsh journey of survival.

For long-time Metro fans, the news of a film adaptation might equally be exciting and worrying. Seeing Glukhovsky’s stories brought to life on screen can potentially be fantastic, but there’s always the risk of the film not living up to Metro’s excellent standards. After all, video game movies have historically been subpar over the decades. But if this film is anything like 4A Games’ adaptations, then fans have plenty of reasons to at least be intrigued.

As for Metro Exodus, 4A Games detailed its DLC plans for the title earlier this year. The game is set to receive a two-part expansion featuring brand new characters. 4A Games also added a New Game+ as well as a host of improvements shortly after Metro Exodus’ release back in February.
