Xbox chief Phil Spencer has dropped yet another hint that the platform holder may have plans to unveil another Xbox console soon, revealing that the firm intends to talk more about its plans for Xbox One, Windows 10 “and beyond” in the “weeks and months” ahead.
In a note announcing the discontinuation of Xbox One’s predecessor Xbox 360, Spencer thanked the Xbox community for bringing “so much passion and creativity to the Xbox 360. You are the heart of what we do at TEAM XBOX, and you have been critical to the success of Xbox 360.”
He continued: “Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be sharing more of our plans for gaming on Xbox One, Windows 10 and beyond. And as always, keep the feedback coming. Thank you.”
Spencer dropped hints at a successor to the Xbox One last month, after revealing that consumers would see Microsoft “come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible”.
He later suggested that the console wouldn’t simply be a slightly more powerful version of the current system, but a “substantial” upgrade.
Sony, meanwhile, is widely reported to be working on a new version of its PS4 system, allegedly codenamed ‘Neo’. The console is reported to feature an improved CPU, GPU and memory, with Neo-ready games set to ship from October.
The speculation has led many to believe that both platform holders will unveil new hardware at E3 this June. Nintendo, meanwhile, is also working on a new console codenamed ‘NX’.
