With the Xbox One X out of the door, Microsoft is now seeking to ramp back up into making sure there’s more games coming out under the Xbox brand in the future according to Xbox head Phil Spencer.
In an interview with Bloomberg conducted just before the console’s launch, Spencer spoke on how the giant was looking into investing more time and resources into in-house development ‘including starting or acquiring studios’.
Microsoft has come under fire in recent years for moves like cancelling Scalebound and the shuttering of Lionhead among others. Phil said ‘We need to grow, and I look forward to doing that. Our ability to go create content has to be one of our strengths. We haven’t always invested at the same level. We’ve gone through ups and downs in the investment.”
Interestingly, Spencer also mentions in the interview how Microsoft may be looking towards some kind of streaming service in the near future, saying ‘Microsoft will probably debut a streaming service that doesn’t require a console for some types of content in the next three years.’
Apparently a 2012 internal trial of a similar service was considered ‘too costly’ and never saw the light of day, but ‘Microsoft’s progress in Azure cloud services over the past few years is changing the economics and quality level.’
