In the last 2.5 years that Microsoft Flight Simulator has been out on PC, sim die-hards have been clamoring for the coveted complex, “study-level” add-ons that define flight sims of yore. After all this time, in only just the span of a month, three of such aircraft have released back to back. The first was Leonardo’s MD-80, a highly realistic take on the retro airliner from the late ’70s. Then, PMDG swooped in with its hotly anticipated release of the Boeing 737, the most popular airframe in the world....

Third-party developers had a lot of updates to showcased today, on top of a couple of releases, about add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator. First of all, we hear from PMDG, which provided a development update about its much-anticipated Boeing 737. We hear about the situation of the beta test and take a look at the weathering work done to make the flight deck look more “lived in.” We also get the promise of new preview videos made in collaboration with Drzewiecki Design....

Today third-party developers shared news about add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator, including both aircraft and scenery. We start with another look at the vintage military transport Transall C-160 in development at AzurPoly. The rear cargo door will be functional and the developers will work on parachuting capabilities. Next comes Impulse Simulations with new images of Canberra International Airport (YSCB) serving the much-forgotten capital of Australia. The airport is currently in beta testing and the release date will be announced “really soon....

Microsoft is reportedly building an Xbox mobile gaming store in direct competition with Apple and Google. The news, as reported by The Verge, has emerged due to filings from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in Microsoft’s ongoing $68.7bn buyout of Activision Blizzard. Both the popularity of Activision’s mobile games and the inclusion of King are major factors in Microsoft’s buyout as it looks to expand the Xbox brand further into mobile gaming....

The Initiative, one of Microsoft’s first-party developers which is shrouded in mystery, has welcomed 16 new recruits to its studio, including talent from Crystal Dynamics and Bungie (via IGN). The studio has been collecting developers for a very long time now, to work on an unannounced title which uses “various weapons, gadgets, and a camera surveillance system.” Its latest additions include Remi Lacoste and Christine Thompson. Lacoste had spent ten years with Crystal Dynamics, beginning as the lead cinematographer for Tomb Raider, then ascending to cinematic experience director for Rise of the Tomb Raider, and then game director for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Marvel’s Avengers....
