Square Enix may be opening a new studio in the west, shortly after selling its previous western studios to Embracer. Studio Onoma is part of an application on the Canadian Trademarks Database, with the applicant Square Enix Newco. According to the application, Studio Onoma will both develop and publish video game software, in addition to working on merchandise like strategy guides, posters, clothing, toys, and action figures. A new patch has just dropped for Marvel Snap, the new digital card game from Second Dinner. The patch introduces the new Nexus Event, which gives players the chance to spend Gold to get all sorts of rewards including the Jane Foster and Destroyer cards, variants, and avatars. For as outlandish as the series could be, Hideo Kojima always tried to make sure Metal Gear Solid was grounded in reality. Among psychics, pseudoscience shenanigans, and superhuman feats that require a suspension of disbelief there’s a narrative intent on discussing real life issues with real life people. Halfway through the original Metal Gear Solid, it’s clear that Solid Snake isn’t a typical rough and tough video game protagonist, but a portrait of a depressed and utterly spent man who could very well exist....
Both founders of Call of Duty: WWII developer Sledgehammer Games have departed the studio after nearly a decade. Michael Condrey and Glenn Schofield have now taken up executive-level positions at publisher Activision, with Aaron Halon replacing them as studio overlord. While it’s not yet clear why the pair decided to move on, it’s fair to say the duo are leaving on a high. After all, Call of Duty: WWII has drummed up some impressive sales since its November launch, and notched up over half a billion dollars in sales during its first weekend alone....
Microsoft is reportedly set to plug a gap in its Game Pass line-up by launching a new family plan, enabling five users to access the service using one subscription, later this year. That’s according to Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who, citing “trusted sources familiar with with Microsoft’s efforts”, reports the family plan has been in the works for some time as Microsoft navigated issues around royalty distribution and third-party licenses. Those kinks are presumably close to being ironed out now, however, with Corden suggesting an official unveiling may happen relatively soon....
One gaming curiosity that always fascinated me was games that were identical, yet had new art thrown on top of something else. Think how a video game based on the Magical Hat anime became Decap Attack. Same controls and gameplay, but different level design and graphics. It’s usually done when there are licensing issues, but not always (think Super Mario Bros. 2). I had some high hopes for the second Immortals Fenyx Rising DLC, Myths of the Eastern Realm, but there’s practically nothing new here to see....
Bungie has confirmed that the first expansion for Destiny 2 will be called Curse of Osiris. This expansion will focus on the Warlock Osiris, which was also the name of Destiny’s intense multiplayer event, Trials of Osiris. This news has been confirmed by Bungie’s marketing director, Eric Osbourne, who tweeted that the Xbox store listing of the DLC wasn’t a leak, and the information described is infact real. It’s been known for a while that Osiris would feature in the first DLC expansion, mainly because the Osiris’ symbol is featured as the logo on the DLC cover....
After two developers of Ion Fury were exposed using derogatory language on the game’s Discord server, targeted primarily at the transgender community and women, developer Voidpoint and publisher 3D Realms have both issued statements apologizing for the two developers’ behavior. They have also vowed to take on a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech going forward. Additionally, Voidpoint has pledged to donate $10,000 to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQI-identifying youth....
May’s second crop of games headed to Xbox Game Pass includes Jurassic World Evolution 2, available today, plus Sniper Elite 5 and Pac-Man Museum+. Jurassic World Evolution 2 is the dinosaur management sim sequel which adds in plenty of new features and creatures, including flying and airborne reptiles. Developer Frontier last year admitted the game had under-performed, something it blamed on the delay of the upcoming Jurassic World Dominion movie, now due in June....
Frontier Developments has announced that it is to release a new DLC for its dinosaur theme park management sim, Jurassic World Evolution. Entitled Claire’s Sanctuary, the standalone campaign will see players return to the infamous Isla Nublar, only this time on behalf of Claire Dearing – played by Bryce Dallas Howard in the two Jurassic World movies – to save the dinosaurs there from the volcano’s imminent eruption as depicted in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom....
