One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transposed into a video game adaptation of Franz Kafka’s oft-referenced The Metamorphosis. While the game has very little to do with its source material, it certainly has a great many charms. The visuals are excellent, the sense of scale is wonderfully executed, and the events on display are typically amusing. Still, the game can feel a bit rote, plus it’s rather short and the narrative fizzles out unsatisfactorily....

Asobo has officially rolled out another major update for the hit flight sim. Dubbed Sim Update VI, this new update brings with it a slew of improvements to Microsoft Flight Simulator inside and out. It includes changes and improvements to various aircraft, aircraft systems, graphic options, engine optimizations, the UI and more. Simmers should see more stability, as various CTD errors with Microsoft Flight Simulator have been fixed. More optimization on the sim’s backend should also lead to better performance within the sim....

Immortals Fenyx Rising is another new open-world RPG from Ubisoft. It runs on Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, so I wasn’t expecting it to be well-optimized off the bat. However, it’s certainly a good looking game, even if it lacks the wow factor of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. As such, I expect performance to get boosted in the coming weeks. To be clear, though, aside from optimization, this is a good version. It’s not buggy and I had zero progression issues even after nearly 50 hours of play....

Sony Pictures has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Monster Hunter movie over the weekend, which gave us two new things to look at including a first glimpse of an acual monster and an interesting release window. It looks like Stadia-exclusive horror Gylt will shortly release on other platforms. Whilst not confirmed formally by Rime developer Tequila Works, a tweet on the studio’s official Twitter channel posted cover art from the game with the word “soon”. I first read about Lord Dunsany - I am happy to report his full name was Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett - in a collection of Arthur C. Clarke’s non-fiction. Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man was undeniably one of the best game releases of 2018. Like so many other Sony exclusive titles, Marvel’s Spider-Man featured that familiar polished sheen of a well-designed open-world and a solid story to get lost in. Honestly, there’s little else Insomniac could do to make an already great game even better, and while that holds true for the PC port, that certainly doesn’t stop it from being a damn fine experience....

Episode 3 Kurt Sutter developed a reputation for keeping a series running at fever pitch for the duration of a season, even when that style of storytelling gets problematic. Toward the end of Sons of Anarchy, the pacing became frantic, the saves and turnarounds a bit too convenient. Despite the excellent writing and character development we have seen so far on Mayans, the pacing feels off, as though trying to recreate a feeling of urgency while forcing violence into the narrative that doesn’t seem in service to the story....
